Audibles

Audibles

I had plans for this morning, plans I’ve managed to turn into something like a habit over the last few years. Part of those plans was to take a walk. Except that it’s in the low 20s with a windchill that puts it closer to 3 degrees.

Not walking in that.

So I called an audible: updated some things in the writing workflow, found somewhere to put the boxes Amazon keeps sending for some reason, and moved some furniture to accommodate my new life as a treadmill desk user.

I am embracing my hamster wheel era.

I’m just familiar enough with American football to hold a conversation with someone who might not be enamored of my special interests (currently kettlebells, the WWE, and Formula 1), but I like the audible: the quarterback lines up with the planned play in mind, reads the defense, and on the spot makes an adjustment based on what the defense is doing.

Only works if I’ve got something else in mind, some way to get the ball downfield, to move the needle in my life a little further. It’s movement. Not perfection, but still: progress. Doesn’t mean a touchdown is guaranteed, but that I’m giving myself a better chance of something like success.

And giving myself the grace to make that move. That change. To see that while I’m not doing today’s plan, I’m moving within the framework of The Plan, making a choice rather than letting the situation dictate outcomes.
